Going Broke off Veggies.

It's clear that I have got salad building skills. If you don't believe me I challenge you to a build off at any local salad bar you can find.
Evidence:
Sometimes my skills get me in trouble.
There is an awesome grocery store by my work that has a super fresh salad bar full of all sorts of goodies. I have seen it several times, but I've never eaten there. I needed to grab something to eat in between clients so I decided to run over and get myself some dinner.
I noticed that the salad was priced at $6.99 pound so I very carefully chose all of my favorite items...Spinach, some whole grain noodles, edama me, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, peas, beets, mandarin oranges, broccoli, cauliflower, roasted chicken, cottage cheese, and sunflower seeds. So freaking delicious. I thought I was probably like...ohh...at a pound maybe. Wanna guess my salad cost?
$13.00
13!
I don't know how you Whole Foods people ration how much you are eating price-wise because I'm pretty sure I'd go broke there.  Apparently I like really dense foods. It's a good thing I don't have to weigh my salad at Pizza Factory... $4.95 for my mile high stack of veggies.
You better believe I finished off EVERY last bite. It really was so good...almost worth $13 dollars. Almost.

Do you feel like your salads are pretty healthy? Salad is one of those foods that can be VERY deceiving calorie-wise. Click HERE to get a salad bar break down, and HERE for some tips to salad bar success.

Some of my favorite salads are...this delicious GREEK SALAD
This fresh summer yogurt glazed fruit salad
 This tasty WINTER SALAD
One of my favorite low-cal/low-fat meals... My FIESTA CHICKEN SALAD
Very easy and delicious SALSA CHICKEN salad
Fruit salad on top of YOGURTLAND...oops how did that slip in there...does that not count?
and my latest favorite protein packed salad; RANCH COTTAGE CHEESE W/CHICK PEAS
So how in the world do you avoid spending your life savings at Whole Foods or other Pay-by-the-pound salad venues? Please enlighten me. Do you feel like you are pretty healthy when it comes to creating your own salads? What is your favorite healthy salad combo?

Oh..p.s. BREAKING news today. H&M coming to SLC. RIGHT BY MEEEEE! Did you think I was going to say something about the royal wedding? Cause this is way more important!!!!

  1. I spent $12.97 on a salad yesterday and almost fainted! They opened a new salad spot by me that is $6.75 for build your own salad. Sadly, the girl failed to inform me that each ingredient after 5 was an extra .75 cents! Who really puts only 5 ingredients on a salad??? Not this girl! Robbery, I tell ya! And THAT is why I pack my lunches!

  5. wowzer, that is one expensive salad!!! I don't have a Whole Foods close to home so I have never tried there salad bar. I guess I'm happy about that because I might have passed out at the register because of shock at the price! lol

I do however need a yogurtland near me STAT, I can't stand looking at all the yogurt delishness between you and Janae's blog and not having any for myself! :)

  7. ha ha this post made me laugh so hard because this happens to me ALL THE TIME. I work at the hospital and they have a salad bar in the cafeteria and I am no longer allowed to use it because it is by the lb and whenever I try to make a "conservative salad" it ends up costing me like $6.00.

I love salad with fruit. pineapple, strawberries, and mandarin oranges.

Also thank you for your answer to my question the other day. I believe my problem was that I wasn't eating before my morning runs. I have never ate before my workouts in the morning but I am slowly starting to and it is amazing how much more energy I have.

Sorry for the longest comment ever. Have a great weekend!

  9. Fortunately/Unfortunately there aren't any WF in Grand Rapids - yeah/boo!! When I do get a weighed salad I usually try to stick with mostly veggies as they are lighter and avoid the heavy stuff like cottage cheese, dressing, etc.

Oh how I lust after an H&M closer than 2 hours away...

  10. We're getting an H&M in Dallas too. Plus In N Out Burger. Bring me a beach and I'd never leave.
I'm in such a food rut so these salad suggestions are much appreciated. I am going to do the crockpot chicken and black bean salsa thing.
I never go to Whole Foods though I have one less than a mile from my house. Too pricey and not the best selection.

  11. I have to avoid the place that charge by the pound, or i'd go broke, lol.

When I go to Jason's Deli, I always get a takeout container, even if i'm eating there. And I fill both sides until they are overflowing.

    yeah, I have no shame
