Coming back is hard to do...

I'll stop talking about my vacation now...I promise. I just have to say. Coming back to real life is rough. I feel like I've been MIA from the blogosphere because I have been trying to get life back in order.

I have been busy working.
Getting back to all my clients...
Getting back into my workout routine. Man it feels good.
Answering emails. (If I haven't got to yours yet, don't worry. I'm coming...)
Filling orders for these. Can you say time consuming? I can. Just call me Betsy Ross.
Trying to unpack/do laundry/clean my room. (It still looks like my suitcase threw up.)
Restocking my fridge/pantry. For me, eating right is all about the preparation. If I don't have my good healthy foods I end up eating cereal all day and night.

Oh yeah...and trying to get a blog post in every now and then.
Yep, these past few days have been insane, but worth every second. :) Don't worry. A good post is on it's way tomorrow. You just wait.

Also...thanks for all the questions/comments/concerns on the sugar post. I'll answer them asap!

Sugar...bum bum bum bum bum bum...ohh honey honey...

As I was getting my cardio on today I was watching The Rachel Ray show, and they were talking about sugar consumption. I love this topic because I think if individuals who were trying to lose weight realized that sugar was the reason they weren't dropping pounds they would make some dietary changes. I have people ask me about this all time...about quality of food vs. calories. My answer is always, better to eat good quality food instead of empty sugar calories even if you are restricting your calories.
I have done a bunch of posts on sugar in the past because of this very topic...Instead of rewriting the same things over again I thought I'd just link them up for you!
For the girl who loves pastries you know who you are
For some help on getting through the candy filled times read How to survive the sugar aftermath
Many people are surprised as to what non-candy foods are packed with sugar, for some info on how many grams of sugar are in different foods read this post on The Sugar Low Down if you want some help on quitting your sugar habit read about how to Kick Sugar to the Curb

Like I always say, I am a firm believer in moderation in all things. I think there is room for sweets every now and again, but if you are really looking to lose weight cutting excess sugar out of your diet is one of the best things you can do.

Do you have any more questions about sugar? I would love to answer them for you! Are you a sugar-a-holic? Do you have any good secrets to curbing your sugar cravings?

The Vacation Chronicles - Chapter 3; Been There Done That

In means of a quick recap...
I've spent the last week in Duck Beach, North Carolina. It is probably one of the coolest places I've ever been.
We spent a lot of time on the beach.
 We karaoked.
We relaxed at our awesome beach house.

We rode bikes all over Corolla.
 So. Much. Fun.
We made lots of new friends.
We had some good eats.
It was such an incredible vacation. I already can't believe it's come and gone. Please cross your fingers that Utah decided summer was going to happen this year while I was gone.
That being said. I haven't worked out since Monday. Monday. MONDAY??
It's kind of freaking me out I'll be honest.
I'm not counting walks, bike rides, morning yoga...those were more leisure than anything. We were definitely active, but I mean like a real, break a sweat workout. I can't even tell you the last time that I didn't put in a real workout 5 days in a row.
I said I'm freaked out, but more than anything I'm freaked out because I'm OK with the break. I think it has been really good for me. I tend to be obsessive about my workouts and my food. As I mentioned before I was still very careful with my food, it's kind of just second nature at this point. HOWEVER, I tried really hard to just be mentally OK with taking a break for once. I know that the body needs rest periods, and I think my foot probably appreciates the break as well.

I'm excited to get back to my routine. I am excited to put some good workout time in. I'm trying to ignore the little voice in my head that is telling me I probably gained 10 lbs while I was gone because I KNOW I didn't. I really am grateful for the break, and I am excited to get back to it as well.

Because of my job and my passions and hobbies exercise and eating healthy are what I think about all the time. I never escape it, and I'm OK with that. The reason I enjoy my job so much is because those are my passions. Sometimes it does get hard for me to remember that I need to separate myself from my job...that I'm still an awesome person even if I miss a workout...or FIVE. Let's be honest what is more fun... bike rides/beaching/gaming/laughing with friends/sitting by the pool or stressing over when you're going to get your workout in? For the record...I think you can, and sometimes should fit both in, but for this week I pick the first option. And I feel good about it.

Don't you want to visit Duck Beach now? You should. Do you feel guilty when you don't work out, or are you ok with taking some time off every now and again? I am working on this one. :) So long Duck Beach...been there. Done that...and I'd do it again in a heart beat!

Exercise of the Week: Elevated Plank Mountain Climbers

Sometimes you've got to work with what you've got. When you don't have your gym equipment to get your workout on there are a lot of things you can do using what you have around you. This weeks exercise of the week comes from this sort of a situation. I would normally do these with a bench at the gym, but a chair or step works perfectly.

STEP 1: Start in an elevated push up position with your feet on top of the chair/stair.
Make sure your core is tight (tight abs/tight glutes) and your shoulders are pressed down and back. Keep your butt down and flat so your whole body is in line.

STEP 2: Bring your right leg into your chest as tight as you can, keeping your hips down as much as you can. Return your right leg back to the chair.

STEP 3: Bring your left leg into your chest and then return it back to the chair.

Try these out! They are an AWESOME core workout. Shoot for doing 10-20 reps on each side, and if you feel like you can handle more than that go for it. If you want to add a challenge to a push up in between each rep of one right knee/left knee.

It's easy to use vacation as a reason not to move, and sometimes I think that is a great break for your body! However, if you are still wanting to workout there are lots of things you can do to get your workout on without any equipment at all! Click HERE or HERE for some more vacation workout tips. This morning Benita and I did yoga on the balcony with the ocean breeze and the warm sun making the perfect addition to our sun salutation. Working out with the beach to your side and the sound of crashing waves in the background is rough...have I said I'm going to miss this place?
Cause I am.

Aside from the normal running/walking/biking/swimming in pools etc...have you ever worked out outside? I remember seeing those infomercials of people working out on the beach when I was younger, and I always thought it made it look so much more fun. Well I agree now. Doing yoga outside was so peaceful and serene. Doing some strength training outside was fun too. I could get used to that. I hope you are having an awesome week! I go home tomorrow, and I'm trying to not think about it. Real life sounds like something I did so long ago... ;)

Making Changes: Going From Habitual to Healthy

I have some awesome friends. You hear me rave about them all of the time. One of my best friends, Benita, has to be one of the sweetest most kind people you will ever meet.
She and I have been friends FOREVER. We met back in our dancing days, and we've been pretty inseparable since then. I have had many people ask me where to begin when you want to start making healthy changes, and I think one of the best ways to answer that question is to show them with a story of someone who has been through that process. Benita is a GREAT example of just that. She agreed to do a guest post for me and share her story of her transition to a healthy lifestyle. Take it away girl...
Megan asked me to write for her blog about how I have been able to change my eating habits.  To put it frankly, if food wasn’t frozen, packaged, or processed in some way, it would have never made it into my grocery card.  I grew up only with dad from a young age and I convinced him at 11 years old that I should be the one who did the grocery shopping for the family. I would walk to the store, take my dad’s card and he would pick me up about an hour and one cart full later. I got all my favorites, fruit snacks, mac and cheese, frozen pizzas, chips of all kinds, crackers, and bags of fun size candy of course. I would occasionally throw in some grapes which was the only produce that even got near me.  I couldn’t understand how anyone would like strawberries, bananas, oranges, mangos, but then again, I’d never tried any of them.  Most meals I would eat out and walking to Wendy’s or McDonald’s was a favorite. By the time I was 21 I still hadn’t tried beans of any kind, bananas, most fruit, this list could go on and on.
I have lived with Megs since I was 18. We have missed a semester or two, but for the most part we haven’t had more than a wall between us. As you all are aware, Megan is the healthiest person I know.  There aren’t many days that have gone by, where she didn’t get in her daily intake of veggies most of which I hadn’t even heard of, let alone have the first idea of how to prepare to eat and or cut. I would sit down with my microwavable easy mac. It’s amazing how much the person you live with, be it family, best friends, or spouse can and will make a huge impact on the way you eat. When you spend so much time with someone you pick up on each other’s habit's, although I’m pretty sure I’ve only picked up on Megan's, she didn’t really take all that well to mine…I wonder why?

The first move I made towards a healthier life style was eating breakfast. Not just any breakfast, but healthy cereal. I generally didn’t eat anything until 12 or 1 in the afternoon. I just didn’t have the time, or make it, I should say. I have been doing that for about the past 3-4 years which was pretty monumental for me. Baby steps right?

While in Arizona with Meg and her family, her mom prepared a fabulous Sunday meal as usual, and on the fruit plate were bananas. Once a few of her family members found out that I hadn’t tried one, I knew they wouldn’t stop giving me a hard time until I did. I know it sounds silly, but I mentally prepared for about the first 15 minutes of dinner and by the end I had finish probably a few slices of a banana, and what surprised me most was that I actually liked it. Who would have thought? Not this girl.
(Megan Interjection...My family was so astounded that she had never tried a banana we took a picture of it...so glad we captured that moment!)
Slowly I kept trying little things here and there, and to my surprise I was loving foods that previously gave me a gag reflex when I would see other people eating them, wondering how/why on earth someone could eat something like that. Tomatoes, cucumbers, blackberries, pears, squash, sweet potatoes, asparagus, avocados, guacamole, beans of all kinds (sometimes I still have issues with the garbanzos...little baby brains if you ask me) are just a few of the new foods that I can’t get enough of. I started drinking skim milk instead of my regular 2%, bought whole wheat bread instead of white, and more recently tried to stop chips and cookies. I’d say that the hardest thing for me about eating new fruits and vegetables is knowing how to prepare them. I’m learning slowly and Megs is good to me and patient and doesn’t laugh at me ALL the time.  I’m sure I’m more on the extreme end of the spectrum and you all are much better at getting in your daily fruits and veggies, but you‘ve got to start somewhere right?  I still have SO MUCH to learn. But then again they say that Rome wasn’t built in a day!
Thank you SO much for sharing Benits! (Isn't she BEAUTIFUL????) You are awesome, and I'm so proud of you for all of the great changes you have made. She really is the greatest friend ever. You should meet her :)

What are some changes you've made in your life that have improved your health? Have they become habits or are they still things that you have to consciously choose? I have definitely had to control my snacking habits, and that is something that I still work with! Do you have foods you were afraid to try, but once you did you LOVED them? This is definitely beets for me. I am obsessed with them now. It's weird.

The Vacation Chronicles - Chapter 2; addressing the issues

It's been decided. I don't think I ever want to come home. The good news is I still have 4 more days in paradise...so, I'll continue to live it up.
As I mentioned before I had some things I was worried about, not knowing where my vacation was going to be taking me. Usually I am vacationing with my family or with people that I know well enough to determine what our eating/exercise pattern is going to be. This time was a total wild card!

Exercise:
I wanted so badly to be able to run while I was here. I went out and ran the first day I could and sadly my foot didn't take it so well. However...lucky for me we've been walking back and forth to the beach, and riding our beach cruisers all over. We've been riding all over the place and I love it. While it's not my normal scheduled exercise routine I'm happy to be able to do SOMETHING and I really want my foot to feel better, so I'm trying to not push it. Knowing I'm not exercising up to my normal standard makes me think a lot more about my food. That is for sure.
Oh and I'm trying to add in some other forms of exercise...like...dancing in a karaoke bar and running away from crabs...that counts for something right?

Food:
So, the people who were in charge of our house did pretty darn good as far as what they got for us. This weeks meals were definitely brought to us by Costco.

Breakfast
My eats:
Instant Oatmeal Packets (I prefer the old fashioned oats...but I'll take it)
Raisin Bran & Skim Milk
Protein Bars I brought from home
Stayed away from :
Costco muffins (each muffin has about 610-1000 calories in it and 35-40 grams of fat depending on which flavor you choose. Yikes)
Costco Bagels & Cream Cheese (300-350 calories per bagel and 100 calories for 1 oz cream cheese)
Sugar Cereals (Coco Puffs, Lucky Charms, etc.) Not the worst in calories or fat but high in sugar low in nutrients.

Lunch
My eats:
Deli turkey, pita chips, & veggies w/hummus (Everyone else was having croissant sandwiches)
Whole wheat tortilla w/deli turkey, avocado, lettuce, mango salsa
Can of Costco Chicken mixed w/light mayo & ground pepper eaten w/a few Stacey's Baked Naked Pita Chips

Stayed away from :
Croissant Sandwiches (one croissant usually has about 200-250 calories)
Processed Cheese (Who actually eats this stuff?)
Full fat mayo
Nachos (chips, cheese, beans, pork, the works...)

Snacks
I KNOW and was reminded that snacks are my downfall...food sitting on the counter just asking to be eaten...UGH.

My eats:
Apple w/peanut butter
Stacey's Pita Chips & Hummus
Almonds
Grapes
Cantaloupe
Sliced Peppers w/hummus
PB Filled pretzels (Man I wish they wouldn't have purchased these...I did my best to stay away but they are GOOD)
Sugar Free Fudge Ice Cream Cone from the local ice cream shop...yum yum yum.

Stayed away from:
Candy bars
M&M's of all varieties
Chips of alll sorts
Lotsa Candy
Cookies
etc. etc. etc.

Dinner
My eats:
Cafe Rio (esque) salad: Lettuce, black beans, mango salsa, tomatillo dressing on the side (hold the tortilla) I opted out on the Pork because I'm not a big fan. I was feeling over carbed so I decided to skip the tortilla, and I had a few pita chips instead.
Raisin Bran & Skim Milk - You know how I love my cereal for dinner sometimes...
PB and Banana Wrap w/whole wheat tortilla and a side of egg whites
Stayed away from:
Extras with the cafe rio salad (cheese, sour cream, tortilla chips, tortilla etc.)
Dinner has actually been really low key, which I'm happy with. I have been able to do my own thing using what we've got here.

My main vacation food problems...
1. Lack of protein. I know I'm not getting in the protein that I usually do unfortunately. I'm trying my best here, but I know I'm falling short of my norm.
2. Snacks. The hardest part about vacation is having food EVERYWHERE. It seems like all anyone does is chill out and snack. I have to make a very conscious effort not to just graze on everything. I've found that the most helpful things for me is to keep water handy and drink that instead of snacking, really try to pay attention to my hunger cues, and eat consciously...really take note of what I'm putting in my mouth. I also went an purchased my own apples, carrots, bananas, protein bars, and almonds so I have some healthy snacks on hand if i need something.

What are your vacation "issues?" I think everyone has different things they deal with and it's key to recognize what they are and plan ahead as much as you can.

Sweet Treats and Strawberry Eats

I hope your long weekend was fabulous. Today I have one of my FAVORITE bloggers doing a guest post for me, and I know you'll love it. Kristy's blog is full of so many great recipes it makes me want to get cooking every time I look at it. She is absolutely darling too..FYI. I adore her! Thanks so much for your help today girl!! xoxoxo

Hi! I'm Kristy, from Sweet Treats and More.  I'm happy to be guest posting for Megan while she's off laying on a sunny beach (ok, actually I'm a little jealous!).  You can probably guess that I have a thing for sweet treats, and you might be expecting a super naughty dessert from me (probably something loaded with chocolate and peanut butter) but we know Megan wouldn't allow that;)  So today I'm here to share a healthy(er) cookie with you.  I think you'll love it!

You might find it surprising that I don't just eat brownies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.  Although, sometimes I want to:)   I actually try hard to eat healthy and to make healthy and wholesome meals for my family of three! We I just like to save room for a little dessert.  And, I love to bake.

But I do really love cookies.  They are one of my favorite things to bake, and eat. A really good cookie is my weakness.

So it's a good thing these Strawberry Almond Oatmeal Cookies are healthy!  Because they are so. dang. delicious.   I don't waste calories on mediocre cookies, so trust me when I say they're amazing.

I have made these cookies with half whole wheat flour and half white flour and both ways work well and taste great.  I will say I prefer the half and half option, but if you want to make them even healthier, go the 100 % whole wheat flour route!

At 75 calories a pop, I don't feel so bad enjoying a cookie (or two) after dinner.

Strawberry Almond Oatmeal Cookies

Makes 28 cookies

1/3 c butter, room temp
2/3 c brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp almond extract
2/3 c pureed strawberries  (about 6-8 large strawberries, I like to leave it a little chunky)
1/2 c wheat flour
1/2 c white flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
pinch of salt
2 c oats

Preheat oven to 375.

1.  In a medium bowl, mix wheat flour, white flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt together.  Set aside.

2.  In another bowl, beat together butter and brown sugar until smooth.  Add egg, almond extract, and strawberries and beat until combined.

3.  Slowly add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, and mix until evenly combined.  Lastly, stir in oats (can use a wooden spoon here if you'd like).

***The dough should be a thicker dough.  If it appears too wet, add a few more tablespoons of wheat or white flour.

Place rounded spoonfuls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 8 minutes.  Do not over cook.

Let cool for a couple of minutes before moving to a cooling rack.

Thanks for having me Megan!
