Thanksgiving Preparation

It almost seems like Thanksgiving and Christmas have been rolled into one 5 week celebration. I don't hate it. So, this post technically could be titled Thanksgiving AND Christmas preparation. Either way you look at it, the holidays are charging at us, and so are all of the parties, dessert trays, neighborhood gifts, Costco samples, and seasonal goodies that come with it.

As you know, I LOVE all holidays. It is just in my blood. I get SO excited to decorate, celebrate, bake, and enjoy the festivities of the season with the people I love. I assume many of you feel the same way. With the holidays come a lot of fun and fabulous traditions. Many families have certain foods they love to eat, parties that they always attend, and outings that occurs each year. With these traditions come a lot of traditional holiday goodies, and often we find ourselves using the holidays as an excuse to go buckwild at the dessert table. Many people even decide to throw in the towel, and start saying things like..."I'll just start over for New Years." Oh if I had a dollar for every time I have heard that one. Let's make that ten dollars, I might as well make the big bucks.

While New Years is a fabulous time to refresh goals, and get revamped for progress that is coming ahead, why not keep making progress through the holiday season instead of setting yourself back. Here are a few ideas that may help keep you moving forward. For Christmas this year, you should give yourself some healthy progress or some weight loss!

1. Set guidelines now. Make some goals for yourself as to how you are going to plow through the holidays with ease. Maybe your goal will be to allow yourself one dessert a week, or you may even want to decide that you are not going to partake of all of the neighborhood goodies that come your way... GASP!?!?!?!...I know. I said progress...remember?

2. Make exercise a priority. As times get busy with holiday fun, or schedules become extremely full. With these full schedules we start shuffling things around, and quite often exercise seems to fall of the to do list. Don't let it! It may be a good idea to try to get your workout in first thing in the morning to make certain that you don't get to the end of the day and find that you are out of time.

3. Choose to keep your family and friends active. Add some new traditions to your family fun like skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, neighborhood Christmas light walks, and hiking to cut down your own Christmas tree. There are more holiday traditions than the ones that just involve eating. Weird, I know.

4. Stay in check. Make a schedule that allows you to visibly cross off your exercise, weigh yourself, track your food, or whatever else helps to keep you honest.

5. WATCH YOUR SNEAKY HANDS. I can't emphasize this one enough. Dessert trays, bags of treats, food preparation, and any other events with food can allow for forgetful hands. What do I mean by this? I mean that it is really easy to grab little handfuls, bites, and tastes here and there without even thinking about it. Be aware of what you are eating! Little bites (especially of decadent sweets) quickly add up.

Alright Holiday Season...Here we go. Let's DO THIS!! One wintery step at a time.

Why I Eat Paleo?

So, I explained a little more about how I have been eating in my What is Paleo post. Now, I'll try to help you understand a little more why I eat paleo, and what started the whole process in the first place.

So...it all started back in March. A coworker and friend of mine had been eating this way for some time, and she was telling me how positive her results had been and how much better she felt. I read the book Primal Blueprint, by Mark Sisson, and decided to give Primal Eating a try. The thought of eliminating grains and legumes terrified me. (Remember me, the girl who ate oatmeal with peanut butter for breakfast every day, and would rather eat cereal than just about anything...any day.) I was also very nervous about increasing my fat intake, being as how I had been eating a low fat/no fat diet like the rest of America. I am not going to lie, I was afraid I was going to fail miserably, but just the opposite happened.

Along with the principles I had researched in deciding if this could work for me, there was another factor that I would be changing a great deal, my exercise. Previously I had been working out doing at least an hour of cardio a day, and three days a weeks doing weights for 45-60 minutes on top of that. Guess what? That routine was getting me nowhere. I wasn't seeing any changes. I was tired all the time, and always hungry. I decided to change up my exercise plan as well...3 days a week of 30-40 minute intervals, focusing on keeping up my intensity, REALLY busting it for that short stint of time. 3 days a week of circuit training with weights/plyometrics/intervals for 30-45 minutes. Again, working as hard as possible for that time period. Long story short, shorter workout stints, but more intense. Making the workouts worth it! Mentally, this change was probably the hardest part for me. BUT it made sense to me. I was training for the Utah Valley Marathon for part of the time, which threw off my plan a bit, but also made me excited to finish the endurance training and mix things up.

Part of the "Why" behind this way of eating just makes sense. You are getting rid of all of the processed crap that has infiltrated our diets in such a big way. By eating clean, you eliminate so much of the foods that don't do anything for us. Think of it more as filling your diet with good, whole foods instead of focusing on what you "can't" have. Many have questioned the elimination of whole grains.
The reasoning behind this principle is because of insulin regulation, and avoiding inflammation of the gut. I would also add in that so many people eat tons and TONS of empty calories via their bread/sugar/cracker/candy/processed snack addiction. The problem is, many of the "Whole grain" foods we are eating, aren't really even whole grains. Many of them are still very processed. The evolutionary process of what a whole grain is now, compared to what it was years ago is very different. Getting rid of the grains is difficult, but doable. You can read some more detailed information on why grains are removed from paleo eating HERE.

I planned on attempting to eat this way for 21 days. I wanted to see if I could do it, how I felt, and if it changed the way I looked. 6 months later, I am still eating this way. Here is the WHY behind why I have kept up with my paleo eating.
- It keeps me full. This aspect of it absolutely amazes me. I am eating good fats and protein that help to keep me full. I never feel ravenous like I used to.
- I am more intuitive about my eating. I never thought I would say this, but because I am not always hungry, I don't always feel like I have to eat. I pay attention to my hunger cues more.
- I don't count calories. I never thought I would ever say this, but it's true. I am pretty sure I could show you an online log of every single thing I have eaten for the past five years up until 6 months ago. It is crazy, but true.
- I have dropped ten pounds. Nuff said.
- I feel more condensed. I realize now that I don't eat grains and legumes that I no longer feel bloated or gross after I eat. When you are eating good foods, your body responds well.
- I am not a slave to my exercise routine. I used to mentally kick myself if I didn't get my 60-90 minutes of cardio in per day. Who wants to live like that? Not me.
- I have more energy. I love this part. I reaaallly do.
I have managed to continue to eat this way on family vacations, with friends, with a crazy schedule, and even when I have to eat out. It really isn't hard once you get into a routine. I am a big fan. I also am a firm believer in the 80/20 rule. I think that if you can do all that you possibly can to eat perfectly %80 of the time, you will be able to be a little less perfect %20. Now, this doesn't mean live for the %20. It means do all you can to live for the %80 and then when that %20 comes around again every now and then, you won't feel guilty at all.

Sure, I miss cereal and oatmeal sometimes. I miss a good PB&J every now and then. BUT I LOVE how I feel. I know this has worked for me, (and for quite a few of my clients.) So, it is worth it to me.
Any questions? Comments? Arguments? Concerns? I'd love to hear them!

A Simple Jump Rope Dumbbell Circuit

Sometimes being home in AZ really is just the best. I woke up this morning and laid in bed, which is SUCH a luxury to me. Usually the moment my alarm goes off I have to sprint out of bed to get to work in the wee hours of the morning. Not today. I stayed there for a bit...read for a bit...played on my phone...and then decided to get up and get my work out on.

This morning's workout was simple. All I needed were these two things.
The workout went a little something like this...
I used 15 lb dumbbells, but you can increase or decrease weight to make it more difficult. The key is to go from one exercise to the next without resting too much in between. This is an awesome full body workout that requires very little equipment, which makes it so you can do it anywhere!
Today's post-workout activities consisted of shopping, shopping, and more shopping. We did a number on the Fashion Square mall.
Maybe I should say that mall did a number on us...It is so massive, and we were so tired after. So tired that we decided that we needed to do some post-shopping refueling. Naturally, we decided to stop by Yogurtland.
So tasty. I think it tasted especially good because it is 111 degrees here. Let's be honest, it always tastes good!

Jump it!

I have discovered a love for jump roping. Ok, I should maybe say that I have rediscovered a love for jump roping, because I am quite certain that my 8 year old self was a jump roping fool. I have most certainly been passing my rediscovered love on to my clients, and I have been throwing jump roping intervals in to everyone's workouts. Jump roping is an AWESOME way to quickly spike that heart rate up, and it definitely works your full body while doing so.
Jump roping is also awesome because you can do it anywhere! If you are vacationing, take a jump rope with you and you will instantly have a workout plan wherever you may be. You can burn anywhere form 11-20 calories per minute when you jump rope. Meaning...if you throw in one minute jumping intervals here and there, you will be amping up that calorie burn a ton!

You can use a cheap-o jump rope that only costs a few dollars, or you can get a leather one that is a little more costly. There are jump ropes that will count your number of jumps, and you can even find ones with weighted handled that will increase your workout! So easy, so portable, so awesome!

If you are wanting to add some jump roping into your workout regimen, here are a few things you can do...
- Time yourself to see how long you can go without mis-stepping. Try to beat your record.
- Add in one or two minute intervals into a weight lifting workout
- Do one hundred jumps in between weight lifting sets
- Try to jump for two minutes, and then recover for one. Repeat this several times.
- Take your kids outside and have a jump roping party!
- Put on your favorite tunes and try to jump for a full song!
- Try some double unders! (Passing the rope under your feet twice with every jump)
Day#27: 27 double unders
Of course, with the theme of today's post, the challenge has to do with jump roping. Twenty seve double unders in a row. See THIS video if you need an explanation of what they are!

I Just Came to Say Hello...

This is my niece at the pool yesterday. I think we should all follow her lead.
I realize this song is not new, but I shazam'd it the other day and I CAN'T stop listening to it. It is my new favorite workout song.
I could do a whole post on how I think Shazam is absolutely amazing. If you haven't made that a must have app on your phone, you most certainly should. Also...If you haven't put this song on your workout playlist I recommend you do it ASAP. It is like a dance party in my head every time I listen. New music is SO helpful to making a workout more fun!
DAY #25: 25 Second Static Squat Hold
This is a great exercise to throw into your workouts to add an extra burn! Simply get down as low as you can in a squat position and hold it there! Throw this exercise in after a set of  regular squats, jump squats, lunges, etc.

Just a lil' Sunday Something

Today's post is nothing more than an update for our July Challenge. I can't wait to put all these together into a KILLER circuit workout!
Day #22 single leg squats
With these you are going to do 11 on each side. Single leg squats are great for SO many reasons. They are AWESOME for tonight your legs up because they force you to work your legs individually. They work your balance, and core strength as well which is awesome. If you'd like to make these a little more difficult, hold a weight in one or both of your hands.

The Luckiest

So, most people say Friday the 13th is an unlucky day, but I would say my day was quite lucky. Work was great this morning! I was able to get my mom and sisters in for some intense plyometric work today. They did absolutely awesome!
Aren't they darling? Their workout was a schmorgas board of squat jumps, box jumps, sprints, ladders, pushups, TRX core work, and planks. They killed it!

I also had a sweet client of mine bring me some fresh produce out of her garden...lucky indeed. Have you ever had these sweet little yellow tomatoes? They are MONEY!
After work, my mom, sisters, and I met up with one of our favorite families in the whole world. Em and I have been best friends since I was in high school. We were inseparable, and she is so incredible!

We met up at Pizza Factory, home of my favorite salad bar, and chatted, ate, and chased children for a few hours. It was so much fun!
Spending time with the people you LOVE is definitely lucky if you ask me.

Post lunch, my family and I went to see the Katy Perry movie, which was darling. I had pretty low expectations, and I loved it! We weren't super hungry for dinner after our big lunch, so we decided to make our yogurt our dinner.
Worth. Every. Bite. What is unlucky about that? I'd say nothing.  I hope that your Friday the 13th was full of luck as well! :)

DAY #13: 13 military pushups
Pushups are awesome. I make all of my clients do them all of the time. They won't be of much worth to you, unless you do them right. Make some evaluations with your pushup form and make sure you are doing them correctly. Start on your toes if you can and drop to your knees if you need to. These are a great addition to any workout, and they work the ENTIRE upper body. They are just awesome. If you throw these into your workout daily, but will be looking strong and toned!

Having Fun Is a Workout

How has this weekend flown by so fast? I wish I could slow time down because a few more days and I'll be back to normal life. I have had SO much fun with my family this week, but man...having fun is a workout.
I was able to hang out with with one of my bestest friends in the whole world. I miss you all the time Benits!!
I've spent a lot of quality time with the fam.
I sure do love this lil' guy.
We have tried to beat the heat by relocating to the local shopping centers. I don't mind getting my walk on in mall form.
I do wish Texas would give me this cute thing back as well.
We somehow ended up at the biggest candy store I have ever been to in my life. Talk about temptation.
Like I said, lots of shopping.
Oh, and we have managed to fit in quite a bit of pool time.
Now do you see why I don't want this week to end? As you can see, we have been BUSY. Vacation is soooo rough ;) I hope you've had a great week too!

Some of you asked where my jeans were from in THIS post? I got them at J Crew a few weeks ago, and I kinda love them.  My niece actually bought the same ones today.

The Importance of Fueling Properly

Food is such an interesting thing. We absolutely have to have it in order for our bodies to run, and yet we are so weird about it. We overeat because our minds tell us that is what we want to do. We pick foods that do NOTHING for our bodies nutritionally because our minds, and our taste buds, give us the green light. We want to feel great, look great, and perform great, and yet we aren't willing to eat in a way that promotes such feelings, body shapes, and performances.

I often times will discuss this with my clients...if someone was to give you a million dollar vehicle that looked AWESOME and ran like a dream, you would take care of it. If the person giving it to you instructed you that it was CRUCIAL that you put only supreme gas in this priceless vehicle, you'd do it. Because guess what, if you didn't...the car wouldn't run. It's as simple as that. EVEN IF your car is just a normal car, you would not fill that normal car of yours up with water, or with whatever other liquid you could find. Why? Because you know that without the right kind of gas, your car WOULD NOT RUN.

So why in the world, do we not do the same thing with our awesome bodies? Why are we putting crappy fuel in our bodies that barely allows us to run? Why do we constantly fill our tanks with useless calories that aren't doing much for us?

WELL, in training for the Utah Valley Marathon that I ran a few weeks ago I learned a lot about the way my body works and having the right kind of nutrition. I went into this marathon training eating Paleo. This meant that my macronutrient percentages weren't what the normal runner's would be. I had a higher amount of fat (albeit good fat), higher amounts of protein, and even though I still was eating a BOATLOAD of fresh produce, by removing all grains from my diet I had a lower percentage of carbohydrates. I researched a lot as to what endurance athletes who lived according to the paleo lifestyle ate, and I added more sweet potatoes, quinoa, and bananas to my diet before I would have my long runs. This worked fine for my runs that got up to about 8 miles, but past that I could feel my body running out of gas, and it felt crappy. I am a mentally tough person, and I can muscle through a workout even if I am feeling crappy and tired, but it got pretty brutal. I remember I did a 12 mile run that I thought was going to kill me. I realized very quickly that my carbohydrate percentages were too low. There are some endurance athletes that have been perfectly capable of running and staying very strict with the diet. For whatever reason I was not one of them, and I knew I didn't want to have to muscle through all of my runs, or else I would HATE the rest of my training.
So, I added in some of the foods I would eat before my long runs prior to my eating Paleo. Keep in mind I was still eating GOOD foods. I wasn't just binging on crap because I "could." I added in things like oatmeal with honey or a slice of whole grain bread to give my body the boost I needed. I can't even TELL you the night and day difference I felt. I would eat something that was a little higher in carbs before I went to bed on the night before a long run, and then I would eat a good breakfast that was higher in carbs. The difference between the way I felt during my runs was absolutely AWESOME. I also was sure to add in my usual Shot Blocks, or GU Chomps during my runs as well.

Now, when I trained for my races in the past I was eating more carbohydrates in my diet in general. But, I remember having the "carb load" mindset, and I would actually over do it I think. I didn't understand the importance of what I was fueling my body with, and how it would effect me. Because with this last race I knew that specific meals were helping to increase my glycogen stores, I was very conscious. It is also interesting to me to think back on the past races I trained for, I was very much in the "weight loss" mind set. I didn't want to eat a diet that was too high in carbohydrates because I didn't want to thwart the weight loss process. I have since realized that it is really important to eat the right amount of carbs, and to eat higher quality carbs to give your body what it needs. Here are some basic tips I'd offer if you are in training and would like to be sure you are fueling your body adequately.

- Start your race with your energy stores full. AKA eat something before you have an intense bout of exercise. Some people need 30-60 minutes to let their food digest a bit.
- Eat something beforehand that is easy for your body to process, but gives you a good source of energy. Some good examples would be, oatmeal, a banana, toast, or cereal.
- For individuals that are running intensely, 3-5 grams of carbohydrates per lb of body weight is a good rule of thumb. You can also look at it in percentages 60%-65% of your diet should be made up of carbohydrates.
- During exercise, athletes need at least 30-60 grams of carbohydrates per hour. If exercise is going to be more intense than 2-3 hours, upping your carb count to 45-90 grams per hour would be smart.
- Be sure to hydrate yourself before, during, and after your run. Water is a big part of feeling good while you are working out, and being dehydrated will be a quick path to feeling awful.
- The most important thing that I would suggest is to know before you go! Don't try out new foods or a new eating plan on race day. Use your lung runs to test out what works for your body and what will digest well!

Curious about what you should eat after the run? Read HERE about post workout meals!

What is your favorite way to fuel for your long workouts? Can you tell a difference between when you do and don't eat right to fuel your body, not just for races but all the time?

Another At Home Circuit Workout

I started out this morning a little crazier than usual with some bread. Well...bread to me. :) I had some eggs with a slice of the paleo bread that I made yesterday. It was so tasty!
After breakfast we managed to have a very difficult morning/afternoon filled with shopping and laying by the pool. It was so much fun!
Post swim, I have been gone all weekend without much of a chance to work out, so I was ready to get my sweat on! My mom and sweet little niece joined me for a great at home circuit workout. I love that my mom has a TRX at home.
We did three rounds of the following...
- Jump rope 100 times
- 20 squat curl presses with 15 lb DB's
- 20 burpees
- 20 push ups with the TRX (you could do regular push ups here)

and then two more rounds of the following...
- 20 rows with the TRX (this could be replaced with DB rows)
- 20 air squats (as quick as you can)
- 1 minute plank hold

It took us about 40 minutes and we were sweating!

It is usually about 90 degrees by the time I get up, (and you know that I refuse to run in the heat), so getting up to run in bearable temps would require a 5 or 6 AM wake up time. Heaven forbid I wake up early on my vacation week...this means that the chances of me getting up to go run or do anything outside does not seem very likely. Because I know this I am already planning on a week full of circuit workouts like this one. I'm not mad about that at all! You know I love a good circuit!

I know a few of you said you were trying the Paleo Bread today! What did you think!?!? I hope it turned out as good as mine did! Do you workout on vacation, and if so do you get up early to get it done?

My Plan for the Aftermath

Is it Wednesday already? Sheesh. This week has speedily flown by. I have had a lot of people ask me what my "now what?" plans are since the marathon is over. Well...I will tell you.
My friends like to talk about me as two separate people, old Megan and new Megan. (Or as they jokingly say, Fun Megan and New Megan.) They say that "old megan" ate treats, and pizza, and whatever else. New Megan has a boring diet. They say this totally jokingly, of course, and they also realize that I have been eating this way for over three years now, so it is nothing new to to them.

Anyways, SB asked me on Saturday what the one menu item I'd been DYING to have since I've been in my "new life" was...and since I'd finished a marathon she thought I should probably have it. I thought about it, and guess what I was craving more than anything else? A Pizza Factory Salad and some frozen yogurt.
Truth. Crazy right? You would think after running 26.2 miles I'd feel at liberty to eat a house. BUT it wasn't that I didn't feel like I could. I just didn't want to.
I have been eating Paleo for over nine weeks now. I ended up having to add in some carbohydrates before my long runs, because I didn't feel like I was getting enough energy from the paleo carb choices such as sweet potatoes and quinoa. I plan on doing a post on my thoughts on race nutrition because I learned a LOT this past training go-round. The three days before my race I added in carbohydrates as well. There was a DRASTIC difference in the way I felt. One of the things I have noticed in cutting out grains is that I do not feel bloated like I used to. I feel more tight and compact. I like the difference. I could physically tell what the grain carbohydrates that I was eating were doing to the way I felt.
With that being said, once the race was over I was already thinking about how I was excited to get back to my paleo eating. I think it is because I have found a groove of how it works for me. I don't feel like I am being deprived. I have felt the benefits it has had internally, and seen the benefits it has had physically.

Here is my projected outlook for the next few months as far as my exercise and eating routine is concerned.

Eating:
Back to Paleo
I'm going to try and share more of the details of what my diet looks like with y'all so you have a better idea of what I'm eating, and I will surely continue to tell you if its working for me or not. :)
Lunch today consisted of my favorite, Avocado Chicken Salad and Roasted Veggies. Divine.
Exercise:
This is where I get really excited.
Circuits, interval training, cross-fit-esque type workouts, and TONS of functional exercise. This is the type of stuff that I LOVE to do. It is fun. It is fast. I'm done with the long arduous cardio sessions for a while, and we're going to see how I do! I have been doing this with all of my clients for sometime now, and they love it. I've been adding these workouts into my marathon training as well, but I couldn't ever do it fully how I wanted to. Now I can, and I seriously can't wait!

Post Race Report:
I have been REALLY sore all weekend. I actually haven't worked out since the race because I'm trying to do this thing where I listen to my body :) Soreness-wise I am feeling awesome today. The only negative thing I have to report is I think I re-injured an old stress fracture in my foot. You may remember last year when I ran too far/too much in my Nike Free's and got a stress fracture. Wellll.. I think he's back. :( I am trying to stay off of it and let it heal, but I'm bummed about it.

On a side note...this is me facetiming with my parents from the NY airport yesterday. They are on their way to the French Rivera. I think they forgot to invite me?
What are YOUR summer workout plans? Are you switching anything up, or are you already in a good groove? Are you liking the circuits/workout I've been posting? What would you like to see more of?

So This is Funny...

I have been meaning to post this since, I went home to Arizona a few weeks ago because I think it is so funny. My sister's husband some how inherited this piece of equipment called, "The Rom." It is an exercise machine that is supposed to get you fit by working out 4 minutes a day. My sister always jokes about how ridiculous she thinks it is, and we have had quite a few laughs over it. Now, you should know that my sister's husband has run a few full marathons, half marathons, and has done some triathalons as well. He watches what he eats, and he is in great shape...but we think it's so funny that he thinks this machine is going to do much for him. It has been in there garage for like a year, and I think it looks like the Wonkamobile that Willy Wonka rides in the movie. You tell me what you think?
The ROM
The Wonkamobile
Hard to tell the two apart right?

So...after my sis and I had, yet another, good laugh about The ROM...and the fact that it costs $14,615 plus $185 crating. WHAT?!?!? I happened to be getting a pedicure, and flipping through Fitness Magazine, and lo and behold...look what was being advertised...
You guessed it...The good ole' ROM. I mean why would you want to spend an hour when you can get a workout in four minutes? Hahaha...I'm sorry if you are currently reading this while burning some major calories on your own personal ROM, but I may just have to advise you to get your money back, or see if they are looking for some equipment for the next Willy Wanka Movie?

Moral of the story folks...the best way to get in shape, lose weight, and feel great is through REAL hard work and effort. If it could be done in 4 minutes...wouldn't we all look phenomenal? Just a thought. It's hard to say if I like this as much as I like the shake weight, or the miraculous weight loss girdle that you simply wear all day, and the pounds "melt away." Don't fall for it peeps. Please. Don't. Fall.

What is your favorite infomerical/health gimmick? Have you ever seen or tried the ROM? Do you like the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as much as I do?

Weekend Ramblings...

Saturday's are like little drops of heaven. Sunny and warm Saturdays are like little drops of heaven with a cherry on top. Today was one of those. This weekend has been fantastic thus far. Here are some weekend ramblings for you..

- My workouts this week have been AWESOME.
Monday: 60 mins of cross training intervals on the elliptical
Tuesday: Kettlebell Burpee Pyramid workout from Hell = sore inner thighs for a week
Wednesday: 7 mile run up the Provo Canyon Trail & I taught my Barre Bootcamp class = sore on top of sore.
Thursday: Power Lift Circuit: Combo of deadlifts, power cleans, squat presses, overhead presses, and back squats + a one mile sprint.
Friday: 12 mile long run and a sweatshop yoga class
Saturday: Restorative Yoga class + a quick sprint/squat/lunge circuit with some core work

- I have had some pain in my upper back for like the past 6 or 7 weeks. I thought at first that i might have torn or strained my rhomboid or lat muscle, but even when I laid off it for a bit it still really bothered me. Lucky for me there is an awesome chiropractor that comes to our restorative yoga class, and he took a look at my back for me. Turns out I have a rib out of place, and that is what has been killing me. He did an adjustment for me, and gave me some rehab tips. I hope it helps!

- 4 weeks until the marathon. Yowza. That came quick. I am ready to be over with it. I am excited to focus my training more on lifting and circuit workouts!

- I tried Gu Chomps for the first time yesterday and I LOVED them. I usually go with Shotblox, but I decided to switch it up, and they worked like a dream. I don't do well with the Gu gels, the texture isn't my fave.

- I saw The Avengers last night. I was surprised that I actually really liked it. I am usually not one for a superhero movie. However, Robert Downey Jr. made that movie.

- I have a few awesome product reviews coming up. I can't wait to share them!

 - I managed to squeeze in two post-workout lay out sessions in the park. That is happiness right there. I LOVE summer. L-O-V-E. Love. I can't wait for warm nights, outdoor runs, driving with the windows down, family visits, vacations, BBQ's, pool time, night walks, etc. etc. etc. ahhhh I love it!
What is your favorite way to refuel on your long runs? Did you get some good workouts in this week? What are you most excited about this summer??

Paleo Day 1...check.

Thanks so much for your comments, tips, and concerns with my last post. I know that everyone has had different experiences with the way the choose to eat and exercise, and I love hearing all about it! I know some people are wondering what exactly I will be eating for the next 21 days as I explore the Paleo way of life. I won't be posting all of it, but I have a great feeling that some good new recipes will be coming out of this, so I'm going to share some of my eating with y'all.

Breakfast:
3 whole eggs with some seasoning sprinkled on top
 Snack:
A handful of grape tomatoes

Lunch:
A Big Ole' Salad
Organic baby spinach, lightly steamed broccoli and carrots, 4 oz of hormone free diced chicken, 1/4 small hass avocado, and some salsa for dressing.
a handful of blackberries

Snack:
a medium sized braeburn apple

Dinner:
Grilled Chicken
roasted asparagus drizzled in olive oil sprinkled with sea salt and garlic
and about 6 almonds and some grape tomatoes I snacked on while I waited for dinner to cook

Snack:
sliced strawberries and a few blackberries
I wasn't hungry when I went to bed, but I did find myself wishing I had some frozen yogurt. Not out of  hunger, but out of a love for the cold goodness!

My workout for the day was a two mile recovery run...and that is it.
I exercised my mouth a lot as we GASPED at the bachelor's women tell all last night. My goodness, welcome to crazy town.

Do you ever use salsa in place of dressing? I used to all the time, and I kinda forgot about it. SO delicious.

Motivation Factors and a Protein Waffle

Today as I was getting my cardio on my mind drifted from Gossip Girls for a moment...yes, Netflix has been good to me and my cardio as of late. Nothing like letting the upper east siders side-track your boredom. I started thinking about my motivation. I have been feeling very motivated lately to get in all of my workouts and I have REALLY been sticking to a good eating schedule. I began to assess what the difference is for me. What is it that causes me to eat better and what makes me fall off the wagon? This was what I came up with...

My Motivation Factors:

1. When I work out and eat right I feel better. I may not ALWAYS love to work out. Sometimes I really enjoy it and other times I can't wait to be done. BUT, I ALWAYS love the feeling of being done with my workout. I even like feeling sore...that is a little bit sick and wrong, I know. It makes me feel as if something is changing. I like that. I feel better in my clothes.

2. When I work out and eat right I look better. Call me vain if you want, but it is the truth. I believe it was Kate Moss that once said, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." Let's get a couple of things straight. I don't support that thought that you have to be skinny, but I think we could change the saying to be something like..."Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels." When I am working out, eating right, and on track I look better. It's just the truth of the matter. When I feel confident in the way I look I feel happier. After I have eaten really poorly I often times feel gross. When I've done so for a prolonged length of time I feel really gross, and I hate it. I don't really like when my pants fit tightly...do you?

3. When I work out and eat right I feel strong and capable. I LOVE feeling like I am in control, and this is the case when I'm filling my body with good food. There is nothing better than ending a day knowing you have had a great day of eating and a solid workout...or a week...or a month. You get it. Making positive decisions and improving yourself makes you feel strong and capable!

4. When I work out and eat right, I eat better. It is a positive spiral. A pattern of making good choices makes me want to continue to make good choices. The same outcomes can happen with bad choices. How many times have you thought to yourself..."Well I already ate 6 of the Oreos...I may as well finish the sleeve." Get yourself on the GOOD track!

Dinner tonight was BOMB. I have mentioned before one of my fave blogs to read is Meals and Moves. I have seen Janetha post about her Protein Pancakes and waffles before, and I have always wanted to try them. Tonight I was FINALLY able to. I made mine into a waffle and I loved every bite. Honestly...I can't tell you the last time I had a waffle and it was awesome!
Protein Waffle
recipe from Meals and Moves
(Janetha gives the portions for three servings on her blog, and I cut it down to just one. This was a good move...cause I am pretty sure I could have eaten all three. She also made hers into pancakes which would be so good. She added protein powder into hers, and I didn't.)

Here are the Ingredients for one serving:
- 1/3 cup cottage cheese
- 1/3 cup slow cook oats
- 2 egg whites
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp stevia

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and mix until combined. Cook like a normal waffle, and then top with whatever you'd like!

Nutrition facts: For 1 serving
calories 198
fat 3.8 grams
carbs 24.6 grams
protein 18.6 grams
fiber 4 grams
sugars 3.9 grams

I added a little bit of natural PB, some sugar free syrup, and a few blueberries. SO GOOD.  The texture is just like a normal waffle. Promise. I had a side of scrambled egg whites with mine to boost the protein.

What are your motivation factors? Do you find that once you're on a positive track, you are more likely to keep going?

Steppin' Up Saturday

Happy Saturday! I woke up to a winter surprise from my window. It was like almost 60 degrees a couple days this past week, so this was quite unexpected.
It's weather like this that makes me want to stay inside all day...lucky for me I happen to love my Saturday workouts. Otherwise I might have been tucked away in bed alllll day. The gym was JAM packed. I walked in and EVERY single piece of cardio equipment was taken except for the stairs. I was actually planning on running and doing some weights today, but the exercise gods seemed to want me to step it up a bit. Literally.
My Workout was as follows:
CARDIO:
60 mins of intervals on the elliptical

5 min warm up level 8
4 sets of quick intervals (1 min level 8, 2 min level 12, 2 min level 16)
5 min catch my break level 10
10 min level 12
5 min level 8
5 min level 12
5 min level 8
5 min cool down level 5

I usually don't sweat very much when I work out. I don't know if it is because my body is more used to it or what, but today I was DRIPPING.

WEIGHTS:
Nothing too fancy today. My legs were toast, and I wanted a full body workout so I was more concerned with hitting all the upper body muscle groups.

3 sets of 15 assisted pull ups
alt with
3 sets of 15 Prisoner Squats

3 sets of 12 triceps pull downs (30 lb)
alt with
3 sets of 15 push ups

3 sets of 15 squats with a single arm upright row on the right (15 lb db)
alt with
3 sets of 15 squats with a single arm upright row on the left (15 lb db)

Post gym, I was itching to climb a few more stairs, so we went down the endless stairs at the Marriott Center to go to the BYU basketball game.
It was a fun game. BYU killed them. Towards the end of the game it was announced that Yogurtland would give anyone who had their ticket stub from the game 5 free ounces of Yogurt if the Cougars made it to 80 points. You'd better believe they had my full attention at that point. They made the last shot at the LAST possible second. It was crazy. I will cheer for free frozen yogurt at ANY time. You'd better believe I will be redeeming that this week!
I had a GREAT first week of the new year. I felt like I really stuck to my eating goals, and killed it with my workouts. It is amazing how much better I feel when I am in a good routine. It gives me momentum to keep going.  I'm feeling the motivation! I hope you are sticking with your goals as well!

What was your Saturday workout? If you attend a gym is it JAM PACKED with resolutioners? How was your first week of sticking to your goals? If you feel like your week hasn't gone so well don't get discouraged! Restart now, and begin that progress!

I also made it a point to record my calories today. EVERY. SINGLE. BITE. It is the best thing to get me back on track as far as my eating goes. I highly recommend it if you feel like you are needing a kick in the pants in the right direction.
Yay for sweaty pictures with no makeup :)
Did you get a Post-Christmas workout in?

The 12 Days of Christmas Circuit Workout

Today has been a complete whirlwind...but in a 10 hours in the car kind of a way.
Woke up at 5:00 AM.
Trained until 11:00.
Met my dad. Hopped in his car. Drove to Arizona.
Voila.
This morning one of my darling clients allowed me to put her through a "12 days of Christmas Circuit Workout."

It goes a little something like this.

On the 12th day of Christmas my favorite trainer gave to me...
12 Burpees
12 Row Pull ups
12 Med ball Squat/Throw/Thrust
12 Push Ups

On the 11th day of Christmas my favorite trainer gave to me...

11 Burpees
11 Row Pull ups
11 Med ball Squat/Throw/Thrust
11 Push Ups

On the 10th day of Christmas my favorite trainer gave to me...

10 Burpees
10 Row Pull ups
10 Med ball Squat/Throw/Thrust
10 Push Ups

On the 9th day of Christmas my favorite trainer gave to me...

9 Burpees
9 Row Pull ups
9 Med ball Squat/Throw/Thrust
9 Push Ups

and so on and so forth...until you get to one! Get it?
It keeps your heart rate up pretty high, but if you'd like to add an extra challenge you could throw in a 1-2 minute sprint in between each, "day"

I'm exhausted...ready for bed...and ready to NOT wake up to an alarm tomorrow. WAHOO! Tomorrow will be full of helping my mom with finishing touches for Christmas!

Don't forget...you have until this Saturday, December 24th to enter the Ultimate December Mix Giveaway...in which I'm giving away a copy of a mix from each month this year.

Too Funny...and FAR too true.

Every now and again I come across something that makes me laugh really hard. Today I have found one of those gems. Don't worry...there will be another healthy tip for my 12 days of Healthy Holiday Tips a little later today, BUT sometimes I think laughter bring happiness, and both are part of health. Right?

A friend of mine posted this on his FB wall (ironic once you see what it is) and I loved everything about it, probably because
a) it's true
b) I see it FAR too often
c) people can be borderline ridiculous...

Anyways...this post on Hilarious and Handsome Sports Guys is too funny. It's all about people's Facebook Status updates. I always have to joke a weeee bit about habitual gym status updaters. You know who I'm talking about. Read this excerpt. You'll laugh, I promise.

"Every day, possibly multiple times a day, we check our facebook pages to see what is going on with our friends. Unfortunately, some of our friends abuse their privilege of typing on the internet and force us to read useless and obnoxious status updates. Is it so much to ask for status updates that make us laugh, cry, inspired, excited, or even informed? Well, for these friends, it is far too much to ask.
Stop with the pictures. Stop with the updates. This has gotten out of hand.

The Gym Rat
Obnoxious Update:
“Just got my swole on.”
“About to hit the gym . . . AGAIN!”
“Cranked out 20 pullups tonight. I’m gonna be sore tomorrow.”
Why It’s Obnoxious:
No one cares about your workout! Believe it or not, most of the people forced to scroll through your daily workout accomplishments probably went to the gym too. And somehow through the holy power of St. Mary, they were able to jog on a treadmill without telling everyone. I’m sure this status is a desperate cry for attention. We all want the occasional, “wow, looking good buddy,” “are you losing weght?” or “omg, I had no idea Brad Pitt was coming to this party.” However, these compliments should be earned, not begged for by turning us into your workout diary. (And on a related note – no one wants to see pictures of you flexing in the mirror. Yes, you are the same person that gives workout updates)
What’s Acceptable:
People want to hear about actual accomplishments. For example, you bench a small car at the gym. Facebook wants to know about this and see pictures. Maybe you ran in a big race you have been training for or you’re posting hilarious/inspirational, embarrassing pictures of yourself on a daily basis, then update as much as you want. Please, keep us updated on anything funny that happens while you are working out. If someone gets trapped under 400 pounds, we need to know. Some guy pees his pants a little because he curled so much weight, we need to know. A girl falls off the treadmill while talking on the phone and reading a magazine, we need to know.
Possible Fixes:
“Just saw Arnold Schwarzenegger in my gym.”
“Definitely saw two guys doing synchronized flexes in the mirror – I really need a new gym.”
“Ran the Boston Marathon this morning. Passed a few Kenyans. What have you done this morning?”"

A little bit funny right? Don't get me wrong. I'm GLAD these peeps are going to the gym. I really am. I just don't think we all need to hear about every rep that they're doing, and mile they are running. Am I right?
Read the whole article HERE. It's pretty hilarious.

Do you know some habitual gym status updaters? I'm sure you do...
